I was very nervous about taking the BBCM and SLC practical. Julian immediately helped put me at ease, not because I thought he was going to be easy on me, but through his welcoming, not competitive way of being. I feel Julian struck a good balance between friendliness and seriousness. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience and I learned quite a bit throughout the evaluation. Over all, the practical assessment process was a very positive experience with Julian.
Julian Croxall was great to work with. It's a test so it's expected there will be some tension but Julian kept it light and as stress free as possible. He met us at the marina on time and kept the testing moving along thru the written portion, a working lunch and on the water. There was two of us testing and he kept us both engaged by alternating questions and skill tests. We've already recommended him to friends of ours and would recommend him to you as well. Julian was friendly and professional! From the start with scheduling our practical test, he was kind and helpful. He tailored our practical exam to reflect our upcoming charter (Med mooring, differences IALA-A vs. B). He was thorough and followed the expected rubrics. We appreciated his expertise and the tips he gave along the way. A very challenging yet positive experience!

I met with Julian twice, the first was intended to be an SLC assesment, but clearly I wasn't prepared for the testing. Julian was the epitome of professionalism and was kind and helpful and declared the day a prep day. (We didn't go out on the water).
The second meeting went musch better. After evaluating each phase of the rubric, Julian time passing on some unknown and not covered pieces of information.
While I haven't taken any formal classes with him, these conversations convinced me his knowledge and methodolgy make him an excellent teacher.
Julian is very knowledge, flexible, and someone I'd enjoy sailing with socially. I learned several valuable things I didn't know before the assessment that were peripheral to my chartering plans.
