My basic rule is "Don't eat reef fish" mainly due to risk of ciguatera. Eat only pelagic (open ocean fish). If I want to catch and eat reef fish, I seek local knowledge, e.g. fishermen or fish markets.

Not really. Reef fish that eat other reef fish (e.g., barracuda, grouper, red snapper, moray eel, amberjack, parrotfish, hogfish, sturgeonfish, kingfish, coral trout, and sea bass) can have ciguatera Pelagic (open ocean) fish, like tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, etc. don't. So, either stick to pelagic or obtain local knowledge from fishermen, fish market etc.
